[ENG] Choi&Lager Gallery is pleased to present a duo exhibition by artists Joong Baek Kim and Soon-Hak Kwon ‘Paths Are Made By Walking’, with a new body of work specially created for our Seoul gallery, conceived by Jari Lager. [KR] 초이앤라거 갤러리는 김중백, 권순학 두 작가의 신작이 공개되는 ⟪걸으면, 그것이 길이 된다⟫를 야리 라거의 기획 아래 개최한다. 권순학 작가는 사진 이미지와 설치 작업을 통해 시간의 흔적이 남긴 디테일을 보여주는 작업을 해왔다. 이번 전시에서는 작가의 설치 작품의 형식을 변용하였다. 전시장의 1층에서 가장 먼저 마주하는 작품은 김중백의 제주도 화실 벽면을 찍은 사진이다. 이 작업은 작가가 벽의 표면 디테일을 남겨두되 그 이외 모든 것을 배제한—작품이 없는 텅 빈 갤러리 벽을 촬영한—기존의 연작의 연장선에 있다. 이번 작품은 김중백 작가의 창조 활동이 이루어지는 작업실 한 벽에서, 완성된 작품을 내려놓고 그 ‘부재’(¤£¦b) 를 담았다. 작품은 부재하지만 매일 반복되는 작가의 창작의 흔적은 권순학 작가의 작품에 고스란히 담겨있다. 권 작가는 의도적으로 피사체와 구도를 제거함으로써 보여줄 것이 극도로 제한된 벽면의 ‘nothing’을 극대화한다. 그것은 역설적이게도 시간의 흔적을 기록할 수 있게 하여 이미지의 제한성에서 자유를 획득하게 한다. 김중백 작가는 진정한 예술적 창조는 예술가가 모든 혼란에서 자유로워야 비로소 나올 수 있는 것이라고 믿는다. 작가는 궁극의 선(µ½)을 위해 노력하는 수련자, 또 그림을 그리고 뒤덮는 행위를 끝없이 반복하는 수행자가 된다. 이번 전시에 포함된 김중백의 작품들은 작가의 전작들에 비해 채색이 배제되었으며 하얀 톤의 화면으로 덮어 의도적으로 최소한의 형태만을 보여준다. 흰색이지만, 완전히 흰색이 아닌 이 독특한 색상은 작가가 커피를 혼합해 물들인 캔버스 위에 젯소(gesso)를 사용하여 깊이감을 만들어낸 것이다.
‘Paths Are Made By Walking’ is a quote by Kafka, … the path, and nothing else; wanderer, there is no path, the path is made by walking. In this exhibition both artist Joong Baek Kim and Soon-Hak Kwon are united in their quest to discover fundamental truths about seeing absence.
Soon-Hak Kwon is an artist who reveals us details through photographic images and installations. Here, Kwon shows us his installation work made in collaboration for this two-person exhibition. On the ground floor gallery the artwork we first encounter is a photograph of the wall of the artist's studio (Joong Baek Kim) in Jeju Island. This is an extension of the artist’s ‘History of’ series, when Kwon was photographing empty gallery walls, void of artworks and excluding everything but the surface detail of the wall. However, the artwork included in this exhibition represents the ‘nothing’ in the studio wall, a place where the daily painting of the artist Kim takes place. In other words, we see only the traces of Kim’s painting process that frame the now completed and removed artwork. Kwon is interested in the frustration he tries to preserve by taking pictures presenting this ‘nothing’. By getting rid of the limitations to represent an image, Kwon manages paradoxically to reveal the passing of ‘time’, which he calls an act of emancipation and freedom. It happens through the process of removing the very subject from the photographic image.
Joong Baek Kim believes that true artistic creation can only derive when the artist is free from all confusion; a disciplinant who strives for the ultimate good, endlessly repeating the act of drawing and covering up again. The artworks included in this exhibition are less coloured compared to the artist’s early works, barely depicting minimal shapes that are covered with a white tone screen. The colours, white but yet not completely white, create a depth that comes from the use of gesso over canvas sheets that the artist has dyed with a mixture of coffee.
전시의 표제인 ‘걸으면, 그것이 길이 된다’는 프란츠 카프카의 “방랑자여, 길은 없다. 길은 걸음으로써 생긴다”라는 글에서 인용되었다. 전시는 김중백, 권순학 두 작가가 ‘아무것도 없음(nothing)’에 숨어있는 의미를 담아낸 작품을 선보인다.
